DISCOVERY OF NEW HORMONE
MEDIATORS IN OBESITY
Two new neuropeptides,
called Orexin A and Orexin B (OX-1R and OX-2R), which directly influence
obesity, have recently been discovered in the lateral part of the hypothalamus,
which is directly linked to the center of hunger, thus curbing
the appetite.
This is currently under
study and we should have results in humans shortly.
A COHERENT
LINK WAS FOUND BETWEEN THE ATTITUDE OF PATIENTS AND THEIR NEUROENDOCRINE
CHARACTERISTICS IN NOCTURNAL EATERS'SYNDROME.
The nocturnal eater
syndrome is characterized by:
In a study recently
published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), it was found
that the hormone levels of melatonine, cortisol and leptin, are very
characteristic in this syndrome, revealing that these patients presented low
nocturnal levels of melatonine and leptin, whereas the levels of cortisol were
found to be high. Therefore it is proven that an identical pattern in patients
with this syndrome DOES exist.
EXERCISE HAS
SHOWN AN INFLUENCE IN THE TREATMENT OF OBESITY, REGARDLESS OF THE GENETIC
CHARGE:
In a study recently
published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, a survey was taken of 1,000
twins (identical and non-identical) ages between 28 and 48 years, in
Sydney, Australia.
It was revealed that
while the diet did NOT influence the reduction program greatly, in several patients with
a genetic predisposition to obesity, exercise DID have a great influence in the
reduction program.
