ORTHOREXIA:
Is an eating disorder characterized by an
obsession for specific food or complete groups of food which the person who
suffers it believes are harmful to the health, and therefore should be eliminated systematically.
Anorexic and bulimic patients are aware of the quantity, whereas
orthorexics are aware of the quality of the food.
The danger of orthorexia resides in that the person continuously preaches the health of his diet, and at the same time he puts his health in danger.
Faulty diets such as these can contribute to a wide range of illnesses that go from the
annoying cold to serious anemia to dangerous cancer.
This disproportionate eating with an inadequate consumption of vitamins and
minerals can lead to weakening diseases such as avitaminosis, changes in
blood pressure, cancer, osteoporosis and hardening of the arteries.
Orthorexics deceptively believes that they have to eat like they do; they
believe that such strict diets cause inflammation, fatigue, insatiability and a great number
of symptoms.
Women are more inclined than men to fall into orthorexia, as
they are determined to obsess with food in a form that men are not.
EXAMPLE:
One day you felt bad after eating a certain food type and now you believe that
you are allergic to it because it caused eruptions, diarrhea, nausea and swelling lip,
tongue and mouth.
Probably it is an intolerance
to some of the foods that lack some enzyme or it could be a reaction to the
additives or to the preservatives or colorings that are added to certain types of
food, and not precisely to special food. Maybe the food was contaminated with
bacterium (E. coli, or salmonellas or a different one) or a virus, or a
mushroom, and nothing else.
SOLUTION:
The important thing is that getting rid of some foods because of a bad experience is
not a good idea and not at all healthy.
In fact, it might create real intolerances, because if you stop consuming
lacteal products in a long time, you can develop a deficiency of the enzyme lactase, which is necessary for digestion.
Perhaps the most important thing is that suppression of entire groups of
food causes difficulty in obtaining the vitamins and minerals that
our bodies needs to stay healthy, causing diseases that can become irreversible.
Consult your physician and look for the appropriate solution to your problem.
