WHAT IS A NUTRIENT

 Chemical substances (+ than 50) contained in food and which are necessary to the organism.

 Adequate nutrition is achieved when intake of nutrients and calories are neither excessive nor deficient.

 These substances can be divided into:

Carbohydrates

Proteins

Fats

Water

Vitamins

Minerals

WHAT ARE CARBOHYDRATES

 They are substances which contain carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. From its sweetness all carbohydrates contain 4 calories per gram.

 Due to its sweetness it may be classified from higher to lower:

Fructose

Sucrose

Glucose

Lactose

Dextrin

Starch

DUE TO ITS MOLECULES THEY CAN BE CLASSIFIED IN:

 Monosaccharides or simple sugars - Fruits, vegetables, honey and syrup

 Bisaccharides or double sugars - Beet, milk, refined or brown sugar

 Polysaccharides or complex sugars - Cereals, grains, leguminous, pasta, tubercles, bread and tortilla.

 The main function of carbohydrates is to provide energy to enable carrying out the corporal functions and provides heat to sustain corporal temperature.

 The daily diet should NOT contain less than 100 grams carbohydrates daily with 22% complexes, 26% simple and 10% processed.
