CHILDREN (I)
WILL MY BABY
BE OBESE?
In fence that are "chubby" or in the higher limit of its weight at a
certain age, it will not necessarily grow to be an obese adult.
If it is kept within the desired weight limits for its age as it grows there is
nothing to fear ; the child develops normally.
As a child grows its consumption of calories increases, therefore even if it eats
more it is possible to stay within the desired limits. Also it could be that
when the child starts to walk to run and to become interested in discovering its
new world it will forget to eat all together.
At the same time the child could be affected by family problems, or school
problems in which case it is advisable to play close attention and adopt a
convenient attitude towards food: make the child's food more attractive, more
nutritious, etc.
AN ALMOST CERTAIN INDICATOR
An almost certain indicator to discover whether your child will turn into an
obese adult is to look around you. What kind of a family are you? If the child
comes from a family where everyone is obese, it will very unlikely that the child
will be thin. It is not only hereditary but rather due to eating habits.
Feeding your child is not a great science. Each child is an individual, who from
childhood has its own tastes and preferences. Some children are ready for their
first spoonfuls of cereal at the age of 4 months and others at 6 months.
Together with your pediatrician you can come to the best decision as when to
slowly introduce fruits, vegetables and meats.
TIPS ON FEEDING AFTER 6 MONTHS
Cooked and mashed fruits and vegetables or those which come in glass containers.
Serve the vegetables before the fruits as children have a natural tendency to
prefer sweets.
Proteins, chicken or meat, should be boiled in water or broth; or cooked egg yolk
and serve this once a day.
TIPS ON NUTRITION AFTER 9 MONTHS
Chop foods into small portions so that the child will not take large
portions. A good selection of foods should include ripe bananas and peaches. And
vegetables should include carrots, potatoes and beans.
Soft meats such as turkey and cooked meat. Allow the child to eat with his hands
until he develops manual habits necessary to hold a spoon.
TIPS ON FEEDING AFTER 11 MONTHS
Always serve the most varied foods possible in order for your child to grow up
to be an adult who eats everything, however do not overdo the spices, it is much
better for the child not to get used to condiments, the more natural the food
the better. If you get him used to a variety the child will naturally keep
enlarging on all flavors and textures.
